A time to give birth and a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.
Today we continue our series and are looking at verse 2 and in particular, the next point that Solomon makes as in there is a time to die.
Now let’s face it, if you’re like me, then death is not a topic you enjoy. In fact, if I was going to be brutally honest about how I feel about death, I’ll just say that I despise death. In the last few years, I know twenty people who have died. Just this week I learned of another friend I had who died and honestly, I’m getting sick of it.
I really don’t understand how people can be morticians and run funeral homes, because it would depress me. I know I couldn’t handle it. But as the old saying goes, death is a part of life.
The Hebrew word here for die is mûṯ which is pronounced mooth. As in mooth over you fool death awaits! I’m sorry, I’m just kidding. Sometimes the Hebrew words just make me laugh.
Anyway, the word die means to die, kill, or have one executed and according to Solomon, there is a time for this.
In fact, the first place we see this Hebrew word used is in Genesis 2:17 which says…
but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely H4191 die.” H4191
And the lie the serpent told had to do with death. Check this out…
So even from the beginning death was being discussed and also lied about. One of the reasons I think this is the case is because even the serpent knows how horrible death is and his goal was to separate humanity from the living God.
I could go on and share many deep theological truths about death because redemption is all tied to death. The death of Jesus Christ is the most significant death that ever occurred in the history of the world and that’s the storyline in scripture.
If we don’t understand that death, then all other deaths don’t make sense. I mean that in the sense of the fact that we all die physically and our soul goes to live somewhere else eternally. Without death none of that would even be a discussion.
First, the death that was brought on because of the sin of Adam and Eve and then the death of Jesus.
It’s actually quite profound to think about. Consider this… how the death of Jesus gave us eternal life if we accept it. Consider how great His love is for us that even while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
There is indeed a time to die, so live your life as blamelessly as you can.
